A family life course perspective provides a guide for understanding the sexual socialization of children, adolescents, and adults in multiple family contexts. In human families, sexual relationships go beyond mere reproduction They serve as a conduit for deep emotional connections, intimacy, trust, and affection, which are key ingredients for a strong familial bond. Topics that seem taboo and are less frequently discussed by parents may be areas where extended family can contribute to family conversations about sex, such as sexual orientation, safer sex, the positive aspects of sex, and pornography. Participants from laissez faire families had the lowest levels of sexual self efficacy and partner sexual communication while also having high rates of unprotected sex, group sex, and hook ups/one night stands Gender differences are examined as is the interaction between family communication patterns and family sexual communication
Sex between a parent and a child, siblings, uncles/aunts and nieces/nephews, and even, first cousins is considered as incest in several religions/cultures However, a family isn’t just limited to blood relations It also includes people bound together by social institutions like marriage.
