Review of vapor intrusion guidance across the united states shows areas of consensus and areas where approaches differ Vapor intrusion (vi) is a potential human exposure pathway at contaminated sites where volatile chemicals migrate from soil or groundwater into overlying or nearby buildings. Under the auspices of the interstate technology and regulatory council (itrc), scientists and engineers from numerous state and federal agencies and environmental companies prepared a comprehensive vapor intrusion guidance document A practical guideline [itrc 2007]. Vapor intrusion occurs when there is a migration of volatile chemicals from contaminated groundwater or soil into an overlying building Volatile chemicals can emit vapors that may migrate through subsurface soils and into indoor air spaces.
In this critical review, we summarize key elements important to vi site characterization, provide the status and current understanding, and highlight data interpretation challenges, as well as innovative tools developed to help overcome the challenges. The national risk management research laboratory has developed a technology transfer document regarding management and treatment of vapor intrusion into building structures This document describes the range of mitigation technologies available.
