The national parks service has released a statement and confirmed with fireisland.com that the few remaining new york nude beaches on fire island will no longer be a clothing optional atmosphere “ effective immediately, state nudity laws will be enforced at fire island national seashore” Originally, the entire stretch of beach was clothing optional, however there have been some complaints from users objecting to the nudity going back to the 1980s. Nudity is general considered okay on the remote stretches of beach west of the grove and east of the pines, but the place that attracts the most nude bathers is the stretch of beach between the grove and the pines.
The nude beach at the lighthouse goes back long before fire island national seashore was created, so the national park service’s stance was to let things continue as they have always been. Fire island national seashore management recognizes that visitors have come to fire island to sunbathe in the nude for many years, and that many responsible and respectful users of this beach have provided support to the park through volunteer efforts over the years.
