My apologies if this has been tackled before but i'm trying to replace an old light switch in my bathroom and the old one only had two black wires connected to it.

Trying to replace the old switches in my house to occupancy sensors I assumed it would be a snap but when i opened up the switches i found that only two wires were feeding the switches so now i'm trying to figure out all the details of hot, neutral, ground and load wires. Understanding why there are two black wires on your light switch is easier than you might think By the end of this article, you’ll have a clear grasp of what these wires mean, and more importantly, whether you need to take any action. In the switch box there has to be a branch circuit consisting of a hot wire (if romex, the black wire) and a nuetral wire (if romex, the white wire) All the light fixtures will have two wires comming into the switch box.

Is it safe to use a ceiling light with only two wires Yes, it is generally safe if the light is directly connected to power or in older homes without a ground wire. To wire a light fixture with two sets of wires, first find the consumer unit/fuse box and turn off the circuit.
